I wore a necklace in the fourth grade
a plastic band studded with
artificial gems. I won it from an
arcade machine the year before.
I didn't take interest in it until
I saw another girl with an identical one.
you took the necklace from me
at the swings one day in October.
you told me you would give it back
in return for my 'love forever'.
you slipped it through my fingers when
I whispered "I promise".
I made sure to keep my word.
twelve years later
and we're married in California.
I find a present in your closet
labeled for another woman and
open it.
a cold, metal necklace studded
with diamonds, sits before me
with a note reading
"for my love."
three months after
and I find your lips against hers
in the spare bedroom,
my promise tucked beneath
the blankets.
I leave my necklace on our bed
with a note reading
'you should have kept it.'
