 Poet 11586

The temple of the outsider

I had not worked
Since the day the great Storm
Blew through my village
Andwiped out our crop
I could not support my family
And knew not what to do
Until the day I overheard
A group of regular patrons
At the local bar
Speak of something
That sounded like Providence
To my tiresome ears
They began to speak
Of a tremendous quarry
Far south of Rylth
Beyond the sleepless river
That a babbling wanderer spoke of
As he passed through our village
A mine so magnificent
That it was hidden from man
By the old gods
Where any precious gem or metal
Could be found
In its granite walls
After hearing this
The next day I packed
And began my journey south
That would take me
From among poverty
To the treasure I sought
Within the days
I arrived at Rylth
That ancient stone hewn city
That many peasant folk say
Just up and one day
Rose out of the mountainside
After a breif rest
I began to ask around the city
For more specific directions
To this mystical place
However, no one seemed
To be aware of its existence
I came to a haggard old beggar
And gave him a coin
Luckily he was blind
As I did not have
The samecurrency
As was used in this town
I asked him about
The abudant reserve
Of which I had heard
And as I watched I saw
A sickness come over him
At mention of the place
For a while he sat silent
Then shook his sunken head
"Many have sought such a place
But no one has ever returned
With anything less that
Dread in their eyes" he said
"That is, if they returned at all.
The few of those who do return
Whisper only a strange word
In a scrambled search
Then they leave
Never to be seen again."
To be sure none that return
Came back with their mind."
After the beggar finished speaking
He went silent again
As if we had never
Spoken to begin with
For a while I thought
And pondered my situation
But it occurred once more to me
I could not let my family down
Who had ones counting on me
Back home along the plain
So the very next day
After using the last of my money
To stay in an inn,
I set out around the the mountains
And through the sharded hills
To my ultimate destination
Soon a great mist
Poured over the strange land
And I could begin to see
The tops of trees around me
Though I was not aware
I had entered any kind of forest
As I drew further in
A sound not unlike
That of a heartbeat
Grew incessantly louder
Ignoring this I forged on
Into the deepening fog
I soon came to a cave
In a denser area of the forest
As I was about to enter
I was met by a set of eyes
How many I could not say
For they seemed to shift
In the dim filtered light
The possessor of the eyes
Emerged from the crevice
Unlike anything
I had ever witnessed
In either the the waking world
Or the one of dreams
It stood about five meters tall
And seemed to be made of wood
Ever rotting and decaying
Connecting by sinews
Of an unknown fiber
That convulsed on their own
Its face, if it could he called that
Was composed of root like tendrils
And its eyes shifted constantly
And were uncountable
As it stood before me
I was frozen in terror
After a time,
How long I could not recall
It began to speak
And its cold, hollow voice
Echoed off the trees
Son of man you seek riches
From the trove of the gods
And so I shall grant you
Unending wealth
And you will know
What they will say when they come
With a metallic hum
The being touched my mind
And impartedvast knowledge
Of the cosmos and beyond
As my thoughts grew
So did an aching fear
And within my mind I saw iy
The thing that dreams
Can not even begin
To shape or comprehend
The one from the outside
Of all that is or could be
The flood did not stop
Until I had passed out
On the chilled forest floor
And when I awoke,
Neither the entity
Nor the forest where there
The only thing left in my mind
Was a horrendous word
That warranted terror
Though I do not know why
And though it did
I could not stop repeating it
"Baalnihl"
It coursed through
My very blood
And the more I repeated
The more I understood
The quest I had been given
By the one that is outside
It is necessary I seek it
For it is no mine, but a temple
The antediluvian shrine
That must be reactivated
So that the outsider may again
Walk among us
I will not stop
Searching for that lost place
And spreading its name
Throughout all lands
That age old cursed name
Of Baalnihl
