I am the restless wanderer
With only the morning dew to keep my health
And a pillow of leaves to lay my head
And but for nature, have no wealth.
I dance barefoot in the light of a thousand stars,
And again in the day, in dapples of sunlight,
Only dapples of sunlight to remind me I am cold,
And I dance through the fields the sun sets alight.
And by the by, I'll rest awhile,
And the rushing of water--sweet--will kiss my skin.
And by the by, I'll meet you there,
By the by is only a matter of when.
But by the by, you'll set up your tent,
This I know, for I know you well,
But I am the restless wanderer,
And by the by is no place to dwell.
I keep you at arm's length, my perfect stranger,
From the distance, I keep us both safe,
But with you, it's always an endless chase,
And to you, I'm but a helpless waif.
I am the restless wandering child,
And you're the one I wander from,
It' not to say that I don't love you,
But I'll wander away for years to come.
