I have looked on this vain world;
Looked on it without, within,
Seen its laughing, lovely side,
Heard its tales of tears and sin.
As a little child may grasp
Shadows in his outstreched arms,
Find them but a fantasy,
Empty and elusive charms,
So time's children blindlychase
Gather dreams and gods of clay;
Gather for their happiness
Flowers that wither in a day.
Life's short hand-breath soon will pass,
Restless time must take its flight,
Morning wear to afternoon,
Evening fade to shades of night.
Then poor imprisoned soul
Whimpering in itshouse of clay
Find its lovers broken reeds,
Helpless in an evil day.
Set up Christ in all your thought,
Price down every good beside;
Never can your idol-sins
God's great summons-day abide.
Let your hope with one long leap
Bounf across life's plastered fun,
Sin's deceitful, foil-wrapped treats,
Rest on heaven's love-worthy One.
Make of Him your heart's fair flower,
Christ the yolk of your delight;
Till He greet your journey's end
With a welcome home at night.
