I was a young man then when I saw him
An old man at the bus stop at Diversy and Clark
In Chicago 45 years ago just come out of one
Of the then cheap hotels in that block
Stumbling he needed a place to rest
He found it on a fire hydrant looking
A little lost and scared that was when
I realized our cities are not built
For the old today I walk down University
Avenue in San Diego my legs growing
Weak with age I don’t even see a fire hydrant
