 Contemporary poetry by Dan Donlan

Tomorrow morning
I wait for my Veterans appeal.
Those guys who open with,
"Thank you for your service!"
And then deny claims.
The ones you wait two days to get
to answer your call with canned voices
leaving a message I well get back to you,
and then say denied! Without listening
Joe who served Coast Guard near his home
is making those decisions.
Some who read me know I recently lost balance
from Vertigo and fell thirteen stairs down suffered
blackout and was rushed to the Hospital.
Joe was either on break or on vacation for weeks.
Joe denied ambulance charges and
all other charges because I did not formally ask
permission to go to an outside hospital.
The Va office was closed for weekend
and the girl on hired private answer service
told my wife to call 9-11.
Joe on vacation. The Superbowl
I had to miss it I was laying at the bottom of the stairs.
I don't remember it being that way when
I was working in the emergency I korea
Less than thirty miles from the North Korea
I was on twentyfour hours a day instant call
Yet I too was held to regulations
I remember a call when I found a four year old
Korean boy with head injury laying on the road.
Obvious concussion and we were not to bring in locals
Regulation said we could not take civilians to the hospital.
I took him humanly and lost a stripe, as humans we are here
to save lives. For my stripe he was brought to me months
later healthy and the worms taken out of his body
Mom and Dad could not speak English but their smiles
said it all. He would have died left on the street.
The closest Doctor was a witch Doctor untrained.

I was off duty when the call came in , Pilot down!" I was
untrained in helicopter rescue but several copters were
searching and not finding the downed pilot his co-pilot
did not survive and we were short handed. I had worked
three days without relief and dead tired.. In a bucket scared
to death weak I found the pilot and was told later he was five
minutes from dying of hypothermia. Regulations said I was
not allowed in a helocopter without training. I lay ten minutes
on the log because two of us would not fit in the bucket while
they rushed him to the hospital. I was off duty and first day off
in two weeks and yet on call. I was 9-11.

So as a veteran should I be denied for not asking permission
to be taken to a civilian Hospital when by law that was what
the ambulance driver was forced to do with an unconscious passenger
with head injuries. Wife was frantically calling Va to find out what to do.
Being put on hold. Five minutes to emergency or one half hour to Va
emergency. The ambulance drivers had no choice.

"Denied regulation 547Dash478n2665 Must ask permission to be taken
to Civilian Hospital other than VA hospital thirty minutes away by Joe.
I offered Joe as soon as I got my legs back a trip to a Coast guard boxing gym.
Now back from vacation. Second refusal. I was not actively serving
at the time of my fall. I was in my mid 70's. Somewhat beyond active duty.
VA care for Veterans{ Veteran's) I well suggest if nothing else Joe be fired
for not answering his phone and reading too many regulations. The sad
part I well lose my appeal by regulations written by higher ups. sorry guys
but I am a rebel. I well have my say. Too old to Court Martial.

Five doctors worked over me each charging $2000 each to Medicare each telling
me they could not figure out why I fell. I was tested for pneumonia, heart trouble,
I was telling them vertigo and fainting. Falling down the stairs. I could not turn over
or walk to bathroom. Nothing broken or misplaced there had to be a reason. Now
what could cause that? I read the latest medicine they gave me and on the warning
label it read Ciprofoxin. (May cause falling vertigo and fainting.)  None of the Doctors
read that and on my discharge said continue to take Cipro and report to VA Hospital.
$2216 dollars and @$20000 to Medicare. several Doctors stand at the end of my bed
telling me they could find nothing. Report for followup the next day at Va where several
Doctors said the same thing and released me in a wheel chair. $2260. I read the warning
and stopped taking Cipro. Sans wheelchair. The fall also injured my hip unnoticed by x-rays
I am dealing with that today with shots of steriods. Make a man out of me. They might regret
that, wonder what they well charge me for injections? Medical care is completely overpriced
and taking this country down. No wonder they fired the head of VA. We are the one's who
served not the politicians. The regulations. They are just getting rich. Doctor who made final
denial of charges for the the civilian Hospital said we knew nothing of patient being on ciprofloxin
after telling me I did not have a urinary infection. Their release said patient should continue to
take ciprofloxin. That's what had me read the label. What is Ciprofloxin. Bingo I figured out what
ten Doctors charging me a four thousand dollars+ could not. One of the side affects is
falling and vertigo. Do not drive and if you faint or suffer from vertigo notify your Doctor. The Va
is charging me nearly $2000 dollars for that information and the civilian Hospital charged me the same.
One Doctor was just and observer. $66.17. You are late in payment. He hangs around the emergency
room and adds his name to Hospital bills. He was not one of the Doctors treating me. I won't sue the
Civilian Hospital. I have switched my care and added plan "F"
