Bat-Ness ( The Vespertilians)

late afternoon sun
autumnal-gold it hangs
pregnant and low
gourd-like near the long heavy horizon

roasting
a grilled Indian eggplant
in a flowing papyrus-thin tunic
my skin wilts around me

unaccustomed I am to the light
the night
is more my home

wait I must
thirsting
patient for the darkness
for the moon
for the tender fingers of breezes
as I rise.

The word Bat comes from the English word "Bakke."
The elegant and lovely word Vespertilian describes
a bat in that bats are most active during the early
evening. Vesper refers to literally, the evening star
which rises in the early evening. Vesper is a Latin word.
I like to think how bats look when they are in repose...
they seem to be folding their wings in prayer until
early nightfall. They are truly magnificent winged mammals
which are essential to the health of our planet.
