I have compassion for the homeless
Been there, have advice for the real needy
Wounded knees, yesterday, went out and picked blackberries
Standing less than a half mile on the highway a younger man
Smoking a cigarette looking sad holding a sign
"Homeless, no job, starving? Wife kids at home"
Guy you are in better shape than me
Put out the weed and come over and pick berries with me
Wild berries are a gift from God
Bears, birds, large animals feed on the berries
Neighbor has a apple tree apples are falling
They lay on the ground until they rot
I am sure if you asked he would give them to you
I knew poverty,,as a boy picked berries in coffee cans
A quarter a can to the neighborhood Moms
Sold garden seeds door to door
For the payment of seeds for my garden
Drove to the fields to pick beans and strawberries
Picking berries were free love
Grandma met me at the door
Occasionally they would stop me give me a pie
Sis and I would have a treat
Mom worked long hours would cook "Shipwreck"
Dad would drink and come on payday
Everyone knew we were poor lucky to pay rent
Vegetables ,overflow of the victory gardens, our dinner in aluminum foil
Sometimes we cooked in the fireplace
Mom could not pay the power bill
Yes we were poor but we would not beg
I would mow lawns with their mower and Mom's would give me food
Sometimes we would even have meat
I was the boy who showed up at the butcher shop at closing time
Rich kids were out playing I was sweeping floors
Giving me scraps for my dog
Barney loved the butcher would guard his store
Zukinni is another gift from God
Prolific grower I sold ten cents each
Learned to cook green tomatoes
Stand on a corner holding signs was for bums
Cigarettes a sign of wasting money for family food
I never held signs would not take anything without offering help
God helps those who help themselves
