Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

Who’s this?” she asked holding it up
For her Great-Gran to see.
The old woman took the picture
From the child propped on her knee.

And squinting age worn, feeble eyes,
She held it to the light.
The image on the photograph
Had faded like her sight.

But she did recognize her husband
Of over sixty years.
Somehow the slightest glimpse of him
Could still extract her tears.

She hugged the child and brushed them off
With one sweep of her hand
“Why, that’s your Great Granddaddy, Miss,
As a much younger man.”

“My Poppy’s in a uniform,” the girl
Observed and said.
“That’s when he was a soldier boy
A fore that he was dead?”

“Yes, Missy,” she replied, “a fore
And long ago.
Her memory traveled back through time…
Through yesteryear’s window.

Her Bob had been a soldier boy…
A soldier brave and bold.
She still recalled those war waged months
And sad stories he had told.

But in this picture he was guard
Over a famous tomb…
The unknown soldier, she recalled…
 The duty of her groom.

He’d shared his deepest thoughts about
The one they’d laid to rest
 In the white marble sarcophagus
And wondered more or less…

Where was he from? Who was this guy
With no name on his stone?
He surely was some mother’s son…
How sad to be unknown!

“But, then,” he’d told her tenderly…
His faith making the claim…
“They know who he is in Heaven, hon..
God knows every soldier’s name.”

1 John 3:14-15
We know that we have passed from death to life,
because we love our brothers. Anyone who does
 not love remains in death.
