I have a box of darkness
its filled with all I have lacked
and the memories I have stacked
so many bleak and black
a redundancy of shadow
cloaked in a pinching clarity of sharpness
it was
a box given unto me
with contents mostly I have yet to see
it was given unto me
the day I was born
I would have preferred this gift
to have been torn
from my tiny hands
its contents indivisible and invisible
much too large for one child
to understand
yet charged with this task
I steeled myself to
comprehend
I know I've lacked the courage
at times even
just to stand
I'd like the box returned
though I know this order's
not mine to countermand
surely God had sent it
so I must divine its purpose
and learn its
hard lesson
and then transcribe IT onto my heart
toiling at what only older hands can
opening this box of darkness
I now will do the best
I can.
