I don't know if you have a name
(I have one for you in mind)
all I know is I like you
ever so much
you bring your company to me every morning
I can count on your arrival
like clockwork
with you I do not feel
colder or lonely
we share early conversations that have no voice
there's something so satisfying about dropping
a steady stream of almonds
off my balcony
sweet crunchy rich-ness
they must seem unexpected
yet each day you arrive
what are you thinking
is it
"oh what a surprise the world is..."
after hunger and bitter cold
and a turbulent winter storm
and a thick hoar of ice coating all
then here
a cache of raw almonds
they are scattered
over the ground
near your tree
I can see you traipsing away
a cheek puffed with bounty
are you pleased
relieved
chattering away
the way you do
afterwards your tail flicking west to east
while I gaze down on you from my perch
the balcony
smiling broadly at you
as I bite into an almond with my teeth.
