What'll I Do, Without You

(LAST NIGHT WE WERE TALKING ABOUT YOU.
HOW OUR LIVES ARE CHANGED
AND WHAT WE MISS MOST ABOUT YOU.
WE HAVE THIS CONVERSATION NEARLY EVERY NIGHT.
WE COULD SPEAK OR WRITE A THOUSAND WORDS OF YOU.
AN EON OF WORDS.
IT WOULDN'T BE ENOUGH TO DESCRIBE YOU.
HOW WE BOTH FEEL ABOUT YOU.
YOU WERE OUR SUNRISE. OUR KNIGHT IN THE DARKNESS.
WITHOUT YOU, WE'VE BEEN PLUNGED INTO A SORT OF
NEARLY PERMANENT TWILIGHT.
WE'RE TRYING TO COMPREHEND WHERE YOU WENT.
WHAT ADVENTURES YOU WILL BE ONTO WITHOUT US.)

I miss you in the morning
when it was just growing light
when dawn was just peeking in the sky
and your little voice would cast back the dark
breaking the yolk of a new day
I miss you

I miss how you would nuzzle me
or coax me almost wide awake
and the short journey we would take together
to the kitchen
where I'd fix your breakfast

and then to the balcony window
to watch the birds
and the distracted people bustling by like herds
of gathering buffalo
unaware of our pair of all-seeing eyes

I miss how you'd
chortle your pleasure and surprise
at all we'd see
and then let me hoist you high into my lap
so I could hold your warmth near

closer to me
you were my little sunrise
my reason for rising
my joy
my simple happiness

today I reached for you
awoke with a start
at our same appointed time
expecting you waiting for me
your little heart beating
in attendance
by my bedside

but this morning
there's silence
a chill
my tears travel
down my nose to
the end of my face
I let them fall

I have lost my way
in the small space where you once were
what'll I do
without you
