What If

what if you lost
yourself
what if you lost you
in a fire
or a firestorm
you became ashes
and you had to rise again
what if

what if
you had it all
and let it go
a kite string-free
sailing above everything
on a bright blue heaven of luck
and hope
you could give and give
because
you were born on third base
but were generous
and didn't care about your place
what if

what if
you didn't need a thing
could make whatever you needed
from anything
something from the heap
of something from the ground
your brain kept you from going down
you were a thriving
survivalist
no one saw your footprints
because their impact hardly made
a sound
what if

what if
you loved all creatures great
even the smallest of the small
size made no difference at all
like from the large-ness of the houses where they lived or
how fine were their clothes
or the sort of food they sieved
unfamiliar you were with all messages and messengers
of hate
every color was a color of the rainbow
and then what if
you thought the world
and everything in it was
meant to be kept and to stay
not just the Special Of The Day
what if
