Once upon a time
Now in the long ago
A little boy met an old man
Beside a victory lunch
Sat a hungry bunch
Mounds of hot-dogs
Just before hungry hands
The little boy
Met the old man's eyes
As he stood from gathering cans
The two of them
Stayed within each others gaze
A connection made between him and he
A child's first moment of empathy
found an old man remembering
How to believe
Mister would you like a dog
We're celebrating
It's end season for my team
We won a game
We REALLY did
This time the victory walk for us
How bout these dogs
They're really great
Heck I have already eaten three
My little man
Had made the question known
Before he thought to ask
The Mommy who was me
The old man shifted his gaze
To my smile of its Okay
And a toothless grin was seen
The little boy took him by the hand
Sit right here by me
Hey guys pass the mustard please
Here ... have some chips
We got lots of dips
There is more for you
When you leave
Which was the
Greatest lesson learned
Between the two
Living now within the golden rule
Loving their neighbor
And their fellow man
Was it the little boy
That somehow saw a need?
Or was it the old man
That was touched
By the child's heart and hand?
A true story of long ago
This story is of my little boy,
Kenneth who is now grown
How quickly time passes
The old man?
We never knew his name
How could we not
Have asked of him his name?
