This Cow Tale

the cow
thundered out the back door
she's about her last business

gambling on fairer pastures
so far escaping detection
of overhead security cameras

all that elevator music to calm her down
she wasn't buying it or
willing to cash her chips in

she has plans for heaven still
on earth
and she's bringing three new friends
all of them together
are AWOL
on the lam
missing from the action

watching the telly
two police cars attempt
to coral her in
this is dire business

they interview a witness
in an International Harvester cap
"Can you believe that Nutter?"
That feller who set up an account
on that society network the youngsters
is on? A fund fer fugitive cows?
Don't that beat all?"

"If'n y'all asks me,
the girls all belongs on me
burger bun."

But at $2,000 a pop,
the cows are now rising
to the cream on the top.
$3,800 and climbing.
$16,000 til goal to purchase freedom.

I applaud and contribute to their
endeavor.
Never met a hamburger worth eating
or that I liked...
Here's to having this rare story end well
and not well done.

Here's to hoping the four girls
live to grow old
--may this cow tale
end better than James Agee's.*

written to honor the escapees
may the four girls win their hard run freedom

JAMES AGEE...WROTE A MOTHER'S TALE
READ IT SOMETIME...MAYBE IT WILL OPEN YOUR
EYES AND HEARTS A BIT.

I think The Dalai Lama might enjoy this tale.
It turns out that there were six cows in St. Louis MO
who went for their great escape. Other cows in other
lands have faced a similar trial.  A whole herd of dairy
cows in Germany were saved from certain death because
in the farmer's eyes they had outlived their usefulness.
