Football and Easter Sunday:
Easter story on bottom of football
Not all kids want to be a hero
Grandson played football
One of three of my boys to play sports
He never followed up on sports
it was not lack of ability
The one big game he played
His team invited to play halftime game
He was chosen player of the game
Interviewed at halftime on TV
The Husky-Idaho game one year
Halftime entertainment
He was eight playing under ten football
Smallest of the smallest
Nose guard little kid big heart
HIs job was to get the quarterback
Three times he sacked the bigger kid
Time was running down game was six to nothing.
His team leading on their own 26 yard line
Wanting to turn the ball over as little time as possible
If he was small he was smart
Coach pulled him aside,
"You have never carried the ball,
You are the one I trust to not drop the ball.
We have no kicker and too dangerious
third down could not risk a turnover
on third down minute left in game
Just don't drop the ball"
He was so little compared to other boys
He found a hole in the backfield
He was off and running in open field
a seventy yard touchdown?
Well not quite
After ten yards and a first down
fell dived face first, holding tightly the ball
"You could have scored a seventy yard
touchdown on your very first carry"
"And risk I might fumble?, "Coach thats a first down
they can't get ball back."
MUd was down his cheeks
as the girl interviewed him on the sidelines
The show is called, "Little Heroes"
Never played football again
But football was only his second time on television
The Leavenworth Easter egg hunt the first time he was interviewed
on televion, It was snowing and ice on the ground
Hundreds of kids running to center of field eggs and prizes
Grandson disappeared in the pile he was five
Spokane television interviewed him for a special on Easter
He was bloody, happy, a big smile, coat ripped
"You look a little the worse for wear but you have eggs"
The channel thirteen host said,
"You should interview the big kid he tried to take my eggs"
"Why the other kid?"
"He was running to Mom crying, and I have his basket in my sack,
I just want what was mine he can have his eggs."
