I Keep My Ray Bans Handy

*****

I have no family
now

except for the one
I've created
in my imagination
colored it in with all
sixty-four crayolas
cinematography and score-scripted
sound by Love Unlimited Orchestra

make believe and you might believe
in your illusions
I've deluded myself
all my life

the family I've wanted
has eluded me

have I been covering up a mountain of untruth
under a pile of pretty rocks

all that sparkling
causes me
momentary blindness

and later on I feel the need
to wear
dark glasses sometimes on
even on the cloudiest of days

glasses are for keeping the sun out
of my eyes
there is no sun
in my truth

so I go undercover and
I keep my Ray Bans handy
