Deported for a loaf of bread




Fewer Scots went to the colonies, to do their time,
It was seen as harsh punishment for a major crime,
Sadly the Irish however, would be better of dead,
Many were deported, for stealing a loaf of bread,

Alex Marjoribanks wrote about penalties handed out,
Trivial misdemeanours, the punishments left no doubt.
English families lost loved ones, penal colonies the call,
While the poor Irish lost breadwinners for nothing at all,

Such beginnings, such seeds, a rich inheritance was sown,
The birth of this nation, from these convicts we've grown,
A rich and cultured society, Australia proudly take a bow,
Whose people can live together and show the world how
