Temple

Temple

I must go to the temple
I ride on the bicycle
And on my mind rides devotee
Yes! I must show that I am a true devotee
As I climb stairs
Beggars greet me
But I pay no heed to them
I wear a mask of seriousness and enchant
I must show I think of God only
On the altar are some stalls
Shopkeepers ask me to buy
Wreaths, flowers, coconuts, scent sticks
Means to show devotion
I must buy them
I stand in a queue
Hits, jerks, pushes and hustle bustle
Caning by guards and volunteers
Strains on knees, heels and ankles
Doubts abhor my mind
Might some naughty boys have punctured my bicycle
Some vagabonds have damaged the seat cover
Some hooligans have stolen my foot wares
Many a time I put hand in the pocket to check up money
Frequently I touch my neck
May someone snatch my golden chain
Chain of suspicion does not break
I enter the temple
Shock wave rocks me
Idols of God stolen
Blockade and detention
Anxiety mounts me
Wife and children, are they all right?
Might be making search for me
Tense hours of detention and interrogation
On release
I heave a sigh of relief
At night with pain balm
When my wife rubs knees, heels and ankles
Devotee in me insists I must go to temples
