     “Remember”

She was only
fifteen years old
she wore
heavy metal concert
tee-shirts
and shorts
on most days
she had a
tattoo
on her upper
left thigh
right below
where her shorts
ended
and her leg
begun
she didn’t take
s--t
from anyone
not many girls
liked her
which was fine
by her
if she wanted
a new best friend
she’d get a dog
and the guys,
well
most could tell
she was trouble
but very few had
the inner strength
needed
to walk away
from it,
she stole
her first cigarette
from her older
brother
at age twelve
curfew,
was just a word
her dad
threw at her
to feel like he
had some control
of her actions
but
she would just
smile
and causally
toss it back
to him
with a
“Sure dad”
as the front door
slammed behind her,
tonight
she’s heading for
a keg party
where a local
heavy metal band
will be playing,
she’s wearing a
“Suicidal Tendencies”
tee-shirt
that’s riding
on top of
a tight pair of
jeans
which are filled with
a whole lot of
attitude.
She hears the call of
“MOM”
coming from the
downstairs kitchen
as she stands their
in her daughter’s
bedroom
in front of her
full length mirror
holding up her
daughter’s
“Metallica”
tee-shirt
and a pair of
torn-up jeans
that have a
large hole in them
that would expose
her tattoo
if she were
wearing them,
as she stands their
staring into
the looking glass
falling back into
the memories of
the type of life
she left behind
so very long ago
she wonders
how she ever
made it out
alive,
“MOM”
“What’s for Dinner?”
she drops the
shirt and jeans
on to her daughter’s
bed
and heads downstairs
to start cooking
dinner,
and while preheating
the oven
to 350 degrees
she looks over
at her daughter
and she thinks
“How did I ever”
“Get so lucky?”…
