     “Maybe”

He listened
as she talked
of her failed
relationships
and tortured
love affairs
wishing
he could
find a way
to insert
himself
into one of
her
stories
as one of the
guys
she went
to far with
too soon
just to discover
it wasn’t going
to work out,
only when
she tells him
these stories
its not sounding
like
there’s
all that much
regret
in her voice
and that smile
she attaches
to the end
of her tales
doesn’t have a
look of
repentance
to it,
he had often
wondered
if he had
never gotten
to know her,
heard her
secrets
memorized her
face
maybe
he could have
bumped into
her
at a party
or a bar
and if his
timing was
right
maybe
he could have
become
a couple of
pages
in one of her
storylines,
these thoughts
often went
through
his head
as he looked
into her eyes
as she spoke
knowing the
answer
was probably
no
but still enjoying
the wide openness
of maybe,
maybe he
could he have
caught her
attention
with some
unwritten witty
comment
then bonding
with her
over drinks
and the common
denominator
of them both
not being
understood
in life
by others
then when the
evening takes
it’s last breath
and she looks
up into his
eyes
he doesn’t say
a word
he just puts
his finger
into the
belt loop
of her jeans
and pulls her
into a taxi
on top of
him
as the first
few paragraphs
of her next
story
start to get
written
for some other
guy
to have to
hear
while wishing
it was him,
but most of
those low
probability
chances
of fate
have passed
him by
many stories
ago
when he
made his way
partly
into her life
but still not
quite enough
to block out
all the thoughts
of maybe
from being
entertained
in her mind,
so now
he just
listens
as she builds
her story
around him
enjoying the
passion
in her words
while swimming
in the green
pools of
innocents
in her eyes
picking up on
all the small
movements
of her body
that add the
details
that help
to fill in
any blanks
she purposely
leaves out
in her stories,
all the
time
wishing
 it was
him
she was
describing,
while holding on
tightly,
to his thoughts
of maybe…
