     “Twilight Run”

She couldn’t sleep
her head
unable
to process
all of her
thoughts
smoothly
they kept getting
stuck
in the wheels
of her mind
and waking her
up,
she had about
an hour
before the sun
would hit the
sky
sliding out
of bed
and into a
pair of shorts
and an old
college hoodie
she grabbed
her shoes
and started
running
in the direction
of the new
day’s sky
hoping to jar
loose
whatever it
was
stopping the
machinery
of her thinking
from completing
its task,
her feet
able to find
their way
through the
dimly lit night
the cool chill
of the early
morning
disappearing
as her body
starts to heat
up,
her muscles
begin to stretch
out
letting her widen
her stride
with her head
still feeling
heavy
as the rest
of her body
feels feather
light,
trails of sweat
start streaking
down her upper
body
her thick hoodie
holding in
too much
heat
wearing only a
sports bra
underneath
she doesn’t
hesitate
to pull the
hoodie off
tying it around
her waist
without having
to
slow her pace,
the night air
now kissing
her
exposed wet
skin
till her body
compensates
and the air
draws the excess
moisture
away,
she slips
between
two beings
the one of
a tormented
mind
to the swiftness
of an African
cat
sprinting after
its prey
she stays in
this
high speed
groove
till she gets
to the end
of her breath
dropping into
a jog
then a walk
before taking
a seat
at the edge
of her world
waiting for the
start of the
new day,
she pulls the
hoodie
back over her
head
beads of sweat
rolling down
her back
and chest
till they get
trapped by
her sports bra
she leans back
on her hands
closes her eyes
and points her
face
to the sky
and relaxes,
her bellybutton
pools with
sweat
as she starts
to feel the
sun
work its way
up her body
to her face
her mind
starting to open
up
as she’s draped
in a veil
of warmth
from the sun
keeping her eyes
closed
as she soaks
up the rays
till she feels
her mind
float away,
then she pulls
herself up
gravity
empting her
bellybutton
as she gives
her legs a
stretch
before running
her finger
underneath
her sports
bra
and freeing
the captured
sweat
residing there,
then with a
clear mind
she begins to
run
till she’s going
as fast
as she can
with the new
day
following closely
behind her
all the way
back home…
