     “Texting”

She arched her
body
over her phone
like a protective
shell
the looks on
her face
changing by the
second
going through a
menagerie
of excited,
mischievous,
and provocative
expressions
looking like she’s
rolling a kitten
around
on her lap
as it playfully
swipes
and bites her,
a sharp gasp
or low sigh
sneaking out
as she pours
herself
into each text
her personality
spilling out in
words
as she pictures
him reading
what she just
sent him
wanting it to
be
funny
and cute
but still have
a thread of
bad girl
running the length
of the thought
something to represent
the devilish look
she has in
her eyes right
now,
she doesn’t hear
herself giggling
drawing in
a few more
looks
from the other
commuters
as she continues
to text,
random things
and abbreviated
words
making up her
world
which is centered
right now
around the phone
on her lap,
the drab
always repeating
grey
tunnel walls
past by her
window
occasionally
broken up
by bright flashes
of spray can
art,
she takes no
notice of this
or of the other
people
around her
as she narrates
the text
out loud
to herself
laughing at her
own witty
remarks
as half of
the subway
passengers
riding along
in her car
are annoyed
and the other
half
watch her with
envy…
