Grieving

My cat's howling at the door
With injured outrage,
I'll let her in soon when
I've finished this page.
She sits on my knee
As I sit and write
But not just now
Just not tonight.

This bastion of the club
Has played  his last game
A wizard on the pitch
A legendary name:
I've been tasked with
Saying our goodbye
And I'm finding it hard
Trying not to cry.

He taught me so much
Then was suddenly gone
I know that's just normal
The way life moves on
So, just a few minutes more
Sitting here on my own
Thinking of those years
That so suddenly have flown.

Just a few more minutes to sit
And think of my mentor and friend,
Just a few more minutes to craft
Our farewell's proper end,
Then I'll go the door
And  let in my old puss
And she'll climb on my knee
And I'll give her a fuss.

She makes no judgement
Just purrs with delight
As I sit in despair
On this pre funeral night,
Running my fingers
Through her soft fur,
Both taking comfort from
Her just being there.
