Silent Song

I‘ve become a man possessed,
Of harrowing specters rising up from the abyss,
Laying waste to every sweet song,
Now become melodies of emptiness.
Hallowed tunes sung in silent whispers,
Hung upon music composed in darkened clefs,
The unwritten lyric ever chiding me,
With one truth that lay heart to shame is confessed.
Mired in tangled vines where the beauty,
Of the roses have given way to thorns,
Now this dark tune's cold foreboding,
Winds ‘cross paths once bathed in radiant warmth.
I shutter in the bitter gasp, wrought up within,
This soulless melody that all is become night,
With haunting meter, it gathers in my heart,
To deafen me with an unearned wrong I can't right.
All hope once shining has deserted me,
To the aimless confusion of night,
That shadows the dreary mournful dirge,
That celebrates the agony of my plight.
The dreadful rhythm of hollow heartbeats,
Set to measure the memories gone to vain,
Thundering is the silence within me,
Cold echoes clinch me in the sad refrain.
What become of the happy song?
That played a smile upon my face,
As I rose above every mountain,
That tried to impede my way.
All good has abandoned me,
Infinite finality has decimated dreams,
Once so hopeful and inspired,
Now strangled by sightless visions,
That tramples me in this thorn-laden mire.
How can a heart lose its soul?
To fall so far from love, seems such an ill fit,
And leave me to the callous breath of winter,
Clutched within its dark uncaring grip.
The song has no melody, but its callous tune,
In itself lost to single solemn lines,
In music that rumbles the deafening silence,
Its rhythm becomes the beat in this heart of mine.
How I long for the end of the music,
To hear the last note of this disharmonic refrain,
That bides me in such lowness of heart,
I feel I shall never rise again.
I feel I shall never rise again.
