in times of  need

the election was fast approaching
and in his desperate need
of a policy plan or anything
the prime minister decreed
the country should be mobilised
against an unnamed threat
just speak the normal verbiage
we'll not decide what yet
and every other wednesday
they drew the day from a hat
he'd address the nation
in a formal sort of chat
stress the need for vigilance
the enemy is near
guard your words carefully
don't let the blighter hear
we're in a time of crisis
let loyalty be all
stand up for your country
your country needs you all
of course he won the election
in fact three in a row
with his campaign slogan
let the people know
and lo the country prospered
if you disregard the poor
they can eat the heather
up on ilkley moor
and the pm and the cabinet
addressed the nation every week
to ensure eternal vigilance
while they grew fat and sleek
the moral of this story
if there is a moral at all
be economical with the truth
when your back's against the wall
and play the national anthem
as often as you can
stress the loyalty factor
for mr average man
don't do as I do
do as I say
shall be the new
approved way
