My Dark Writings

So Many Years to Live

Joshua Thompson

Verse 1
I was only sixteen years old,
Had so much ahead of me.
Dreams of college and of work,
And to be married happily.
So many goals I had set,
Out to do in the years ahead.
I’d worked so hard in this life.
But now I am only dead.

I was walking home last night,
Thinking how tomorrow I would be.
Seventeen years living this life.
I was so glad to be me.
I never saw your headlights.
I didn’t hear your screeching break.
But in the next few seconds,
My young life you would take.

Bridge
How is it that you are alive,
When its you who broke the law.
How is it that you are O.K.,
And its I who took the fall.

Chorus
They say you had been drinking,
While I had been hoping,
For my happy life ahead,
But now I’m the ones who’s dead.
You took me away from my friends,
And now you try to make amends.
But what are you going to give,
For all those years I had to live.
I had so many years to live.
I had so many years to live.

Verse 2
The police take you to court,
Try you for manslaughter.
While my parents wonder,
Why’d you kill my daughter.
If you had not been impaired,
She might still be here today.
But instead you broke the law,
And you took her life away.

The jury finds you guilty,
And the judge sentences you.
To six years of prison,
How is that equal to.
A lifetime that I never,
Had the chance to live.
How does that compare,
To all I had to give.

Repeat bridge and chorus

Final Bridge,
I wanted to be a doctor,
And to save millions of lives.
But your alcohol,
Stabbed like sharpened knives.
What will you say to,
The man I was to marry?
What can you say to him,
Now that you have taken me.
What can you say to may parents,
Who loved me so dearly.
Why was the survivor you,
And the victim me?

Repeat Chorus
