Fiery Tongues

James 3:1-6

Are we not harshly judged being teachers?
Because we should be setting an example;
As Christians professing to all creatures,
Speaking of the Holy Word for the Gospel.

We are merely human and do things wrong,
Especially slipping tongues as when we talk;
Inserting words where they do not belong,
Even getting mixed up at times we squawk.

If we wore a bit in our mouth like a horse,
That could guide us as to keep us in check;
Your lips could never even stray of course,
Not worrying about sticking out your neck.

Or ships as being tossed by a violent wind,
What we are saying could cause it to sink;
As the tongue can utter fire to have sinned,
Speaking out before you have time to think.

The tongue is a fire that's powered by evil,
Scorching the body and making it impure;
Because our faith can be so weak and feeble,
And the Holy Spirit needing for ever more.
