 Reunion

I stood at his door embarrassed
Had really no idea what to say
Then he threw his arms around me
And forty years just dropped away
Not as tall as I'd remembered
And we were both showing age
voice just as I recalled it
Not by one iota changed
Still full of laughter
Still the twinkle in those eyes
That led us in and out of trouble
In all those years gone by
He'd shown me how to work the system
And survive the silly army game
And though our ways parted
I'd carried on just the same
He taught me
To survive
And now
Still alive
It was time for thanks
Time to remember those passed and gone
And make sure the friendship of youth
Picked up and carried on
No more embarrassment
At the end of that day
Just a promise renewed
And a wave as I drove away
