Seat slides, surface swirls,

You wrap yourself around,
Hair brushes tears,
Arms circle round.
Oars still, scull glides,
Driven by your will,
Deeper, ever deeper,
Through the fog until……..
You whisper, I listen,
“I am with you.”
I whisper, you know,
“I love you.”
Eyes close, lips touch,
Time stops……..
Hear the sound of eternity.
Feel the bond of love.
Forget the pain of loss, Ondine,

Background note on "Time Stops."
About one month after Ondine passed away, I happened to be rowing my scull (for those who do not know, a scull is a boat 26 feet long and 1 foot wide rowed by one person who sits on a sliding seat and rows using 9 1/2 foot oars) on my lake in Lake Oswego, Oregon. "Sweep" is the power stroke, when every muscle in the body pulls in concert to power the boat. "Feather" is the recovery stroke, when the body curls to prepare itself for the next sweep. There is a beautiful, circular rhythm to rowing and I found, in writing this poem, that it is best read with the background sense of a metronome oscillating in one's head until "time stops." Like all my poetry, this is for Ondine. Its readers can know that love survives death. Ondine's and my kiss is eternal.
