THE FLAME OF LIFE

THE FLAME OF LIFE

The flame of life has now gone out
And a tragic way it came about,
Your life was led by alcohol drink
If only you had stopped to think.

You were a slave to the demon drink,
Time and again you were on the brink
Of going right over the edge,
Then, "I will give it up" you`d pledge.

You may have believed it in your mind,
But the strength to do it you couldn`t find,
So you carried on just the same,
Your lack of willpower was to blame.

You lost your children, wife and home
And decided to go it all alone,
But your longing for the past was strong
And you wanted us back before long.

Back you came but to no avail,
`Cos your craving for drink you couldn`t curtail,
Your promises came to nothing at all
`Cos you answered the thirst when it came to call.

We finally went our separate ways,
Your partner was drink, that`s the part it plays,
I think you went from pillar to post,
`Cos you couldn`t have what you wanted most.

You travelled up hill on a slippery slope,
For  the course you were taking – there was no hope,
The wind in your face, instead of your back,
Boy oh! boy were you on the wrong track.

It all ended in a hospital room
Nothing to be seen but doom and gloom,
Try as they may, they couldn`t help you
And so from your body your spirit flew.

It all happened on a Sunday afternoon,
Your short life ended all too soon,
Unconscious you lay, so you knew nowt,
But that flame of life went silently out.
