Dignity

If I had a Cockatiel I would call him Terrence
Regard his every word with all proper reverence
I would take him for walks beneath great harvest moons
Play him a concerto on matched brass pudding spoons
I would teach him to foxtrot teach him to tango
Make him strive to achieve as far as Cockatiel can go
He would take his exams in Algebra and Greek
Learn from the Bible about the mild and the meek
And to ensure him a balanced point of view
Learn from many other sacred texts too
I would give him lessons to improve his eloquence
Always ensuring he spoke with all due tolerance
I would teach him to fence teach him to shoot
To impersonate an owl right down to the hoot
He would wear evening dress right down to spats
And one of a pair of fitted bowler hats
When came the time for Terrence to heavenly ascend
I would pay proper concern about my feathered friend
Pay all proper observance with which he could be chuffed
Take him to the taxidermist and have him beautifully stuffed
I know some cynics may think it rather absurd
That I'd take such care and trouble just for an old bird
But I have heard our leader talk while straddling the odd fence
I am more than certain Terrence would have spoken with greater sense
