Stranded

And the meek shall inherit the Earth
Or what was left of the place
For having ruined and despoiled it
The rich escaped to outer space.
Second Exodus they called it then,
That ugly deep space fleet
Moored there in lunar orbit awaiting
The chosen voyaging elite;
To sleep through their journey
In the long galactic night
Until ship and duty watches found
A planet considered right.
And the poor and the sick and the lonely,
The despised those of low birth,
Were gifted for eternity
The wreck of Mother Earth;
That slowly warming globe
With ever extending seas
Half full of the remnants of a species
Almost brought to its knees.
We watched that fleet float off slowly
Accelerate and then finally disappear
And we were back where we started
On our own and stranded here;
But there was hope and their was dignity
After the rats had left the ship,
Supposedly the forward party
Merely on a scouting trip.
There was hope that with a different lifestyle
The planet would heal and slowly mend
And maybe just maybe in time
There could be a different end,
And that reading from the Good Book
Would have real substance and worth
The poor and meek finally inherited the Earth
