When the sun goes down,
And the evening is in place.
There are iridescent lights,
That catches the eye.
Like the stars in the sky,
It wavers over the land.
How lovely to see,
These glowing lights.
Floating and shimmering in the air,
Twinkling here and there.
But not a star,
They are by far.
The lights are insects,
Known as the firefly.
Stars on earth,
To give us mirth.
For Children to catch,
As they flicker by.
Why were they created?
So a child may enjoy,
This fantastic light.
I surely decide,
This they were made;
For every little girl and boy.
Lighting bugs is the popular name for these Summer evening fireflies. Their name is a misnomer because they are not flies nor are they bugs, but beetles. It is the male firefly that you see flashing in the air, the female will respond back, near the ground. Go outside and observe them, you will soon distinguish the male from the female.
