I Wrote the Prophets In My Youth

I Wrote the Prophets In My Youth

I wrote the prophets in my youth.
Their labyrinthine page burned in me.
I wrote the prophets all the truth
About the seething heresy.

Of the fallen age, the bent arcade,
The broils of war -- I wrote them twice --
Without the conceits sly authors use
To break the hoof of Anti Christ.

I wrote the prophets in my youth
Of anarchic seas becoming blood.
No apt reply to these letters arrived,
No indignant voices extolling love.

From the deep hush of eternity
Came no ageless words, no vain trading.
The prophets let my letters pass:
They thought them from an age past saving.
