Poetic-Verses from ATHANASE

The Artist's Studio

to Frans Floris

'Forms are only said to be beautiful because of the effect of their particular aspects, and by their reciprocal association...And indeed it is from the reciprocal association of a plurality of aspects of visible forms and not simply from their particular visible aspects that visual beauty is produced.'

Vitellion, Vitellionis perspectivae libri X

See how his forms throw back light, tremble in his interpretation!

This superior genius, the master of ceremonies of grace

who makes of so many objects a fleeting dialogue,

a hallucinated tale, a magical book.

See every sign in blossom! The beautiful, its transcendence,

the knowledge that tells the soul of its elegance,

the fascinating embrace of two eternities

woven from light, from the play of beams, from comfort and ease.

Lord, how beautiful she is, the girl by the wall,

floating like dawn in the swollen sky

of her cloak light as a great architectural drawing!

And this deep wall hanging, these slaked shadows!...

O woman!...Are you a dream, a Muse garlanded with flowers,

an unfinished dream, a palpitation of the heart?
