Poetic-Verses from ATHANASE

The New Idol (English)

The New Idol

'Money, ah! The scourge of humanity!'

      Sophocles

You, poor Christians, Jews and Muslims,
in vain do you attend your high places of worship -
for a new god is born, fierce and ravenous, a crude uncultivated idol
who even now slowly extends his bloody power
into the souls of your faithful which he grinds underfoot, crushes and spits upon!
His name? Money, Tartarus, Chaos, Mammon, Satan!

translated from the French of Athanase Vantchev de Thracy by Norton Hodges
