I'll See You Later

He stood there beside her bed
Tears running down his face
Fightin to find the right words
He could say

He whispered
Mom
I can't make it without you
There's just no way
But to see you like this
It just hurts so bad
God I hope you'll understand
And won't get mad
But goodbye is a word
That I just can't say

She looked up at him
And softly shook her head
There was such a gentle smile on her face
And in a voice so soft
It made his tears just stop
These words were the last that she said

Son I know you have faith
And a heart of gold
Now listen to me just this one last time
Our hearts will never forget the love we've shared
I know I'm going away
But I'll be right here
It's just that I'll be harder to see
There are four words that are so much easier to say
My mother gave them to me
Now I want you to give them a try
I'll see you later
There's no reason
You ever have to say
Goodbye

I'll see you
Later
I just don't know when
But there's this voice here inside me
That promises
We will be together
Again
My body is tired
I know I have to sleep
But these words that she have gave me
Next to my heart
I will always keep

I'll see you later

She closed her eyes and drifted off to sleep
He stood there for hours
Just held her hand
And then came the moment
That she just didn't breath
And left his side
Headed for a Promised Land

He knelt down beside her
And gave her one last hug
His tears were now falling like rain
But the tears that he cried
Were tears of joy
Not pain
And these words he softly whispered
Into her ear

I'll see you
Later
I just don't know when
But there's this voice here inside me
That promises
We will be together
Again
Your body is tired
I know you have to sleep
But these words you have given me
Next to my heart
I will always keep

I'll see you later

Ed Roberts 1/30/03

I read this poem along with "You're Not Heavy" at Nanny's funeral Saturday.
This poem has special meaning because the only person I had read it aloud to before that was my father. He was on hospice care for one year before going home. It helped him and in a lot of ways helped me just as much.
Sometimes we need a few special words to help us through this thing we call life. Sometimes those special words can actually be our own.
We call those words poetry.
My name is Ed.
Yes, I am a poet.
