Sitting late at night listening to Elvis
Working all day on a sore aching pelvis
Now he is singing about old Shep
Putting down these words in a night unslept
We have all had a dog like Shep I'm sure
Even with all our differences you concur?
My dog a miniature collie named Sadie
She came with papers my pure breed lady
The prior owners boyfriend treated her badly
She hung her head near me on a leash quite sadly
We walked around the yard on a leash she knew her space
Time went on and the mistrust between us did erase
Too soon it seemed at fifteen she grew too old
She waited for me to come home each night a different mode
One night shivering she waited at the door led me to my chair
I knew something was wrong the way she acted quite rare
She wouldn't let me walk away I petted her the same old way
Each time I tried she wouldn't let me walk away
Sadie had waited all day at the door my wife said for me to greet
And less than five minutes home she lay there dying at my feet.
