Life's Verses - NO ONE KNOWS

Life comes and life goes,

but, in the end no one knows.

When you were born life was so new,

the morning sun came up and kissed the dew.

When you were one and could do so much,

we ran and played with loves special touch.

When you were two you got sick in the night,

I stayed up and comforted you with arms so tight.

When you were five you started school,

I cried alone, but for you I played it cool.

When you were six tragedy took its course,

when your mom and I got a divorce.

The years went by with its share of trouble,

but when I couldn't see you, hardships were double.

When you were nine you stayed the whole summer,

but we both knew, each day had its number.

I moved around and missed you like no other.

Now I'm a single dad with your baby brother.

I call you on the phone just to hear your smile.

You're growing up quick, but yet I'm in denial.

When you're fourteen and chasing all the boys,

I'll still see me and you playing with toys.

When you're sixteen and dad is just a parent,

I'll sit and wonder... were all the years went.

You'll have your own car and days will seem long.

I'll sit alone and wonder, were my little girl has gone.

And now you're nineteen and time to go off to that perfect college,

your thoughts will be crowded, as your head fills with knowledge.

It's your wedding day as I walk you down the aisle,

I'm so full of pride... that this old man's heart just smiles.

My little girl will have come back to me, this I know.

We'll watch the grandchildren play in the evening glow.

Then'll come the day this life expires,

and these tired feet will climb heavens spire.

Don't feel bad, be sad, or get mad.

Just remember all the times we had.

How proud we were, when the potty was fist used.

How patient I was, teaching you how to tie shoes.

How I was there when you fell off your bike.

You'll have these memories and much more alike.

You'll remember being scared and running home,

and when you were ten, for you I wrote this poem.

All the boyfriends I put through the fifth degree,

and I made sure when he asked... it was on bent knee.

How I paced up and down the dorm,

as each and every grandchild was born.

I hope we'll meet again up in heaven,

but, oh God... not until your eighty-seven.

You'll be there for your children in times of toil,

and have grandchildren of your own to spoil.

You'll know the harsh pain of a parents love,

as your kids see just how far they can shove.

Don't worry, it'll all be worth while.

Just like me, it'll make you smile.

So as you chase the tears from your nose,

always remember... in the end, no one knows!
