Let Me Call You Sweetheart

Let Me Call You Sweetheart

The sun was slowly fading
As he docked their boat upon the shore
Its crimson now playing with moonbeams
As she took his hand once more

She was tonight a vision of pure beauty
Dressed all in ivory and white lace
Her hair of lustrous color
With every strand in perfect place

His extended arm was taken
As they strolled along a white stone path
Paper lanterns lit their passage
Willow's bent to greet them as they passed

Just ahead awaited a white gazebo
Magnificent in the splendor of its day
Set amidst the beauty of pink roses
A swing from an arbor swayed

Whoo-ooh-ooh~ Whoo ooh
In the distance far away
A dove called to the evening
For the stars to come out and play

In the beauty of this setting
Our young gent held a special plan
He would ask for the hand of his beloved
As they waltzed to the music of the band

Now all seemed to be ready
As the band began to play
Music softly met the evening air
As stars gave the night sky away

Amidst a sea of colors
Round and round all danced
Couples dressed in their finest
As all once did
In years now long since past

Excuse me dear for a minute
There is something I must do
I leave you but for a moment
I will soon return to you

He gathered all of his courage
And to the leader of the band
He whispered soft his vision
For all that he had planned

Excuse me folks a moment
There is something
That I must say
I have a very special request
From this young man today

Then just as he requested
The Waltz began to play
Let Me Call You Sweetheart
A favorite of the day

I dedicate this waltz
To you my friend
And to your lady fair
Go quickly
While you have your courage
She awaits just over there

I love you my dear sweetheart
Will you please become my bride
You will always be my treasure
If you will forever walk by my side

He reached into his pocket
While still on bended knee
And placed the ring upon her finger

My sweetheart
Will you please marry me

She looked lovingly upon him
And brought him to his feet
For so long now she had waited
For her life to become complete

He took his lovely lady
Within his arms once more
The crowd cheered
And shouted blessings
As they waltzed across
Gazebo floor

Many years have past now
Since the band began to play
Let Me Call You Sweetheart
Remains still their song today

Tomorrow will be fifty years
A white gazebo again awaits
Within my yard bordered by pink roses
Another band will again begin to play

Grandpa will bow to dear Grandma
Asking are you still my lady fair

Let Me Call You Sweetheart
Will play sweet upon the evening air

When this evening is over
And they are snuggling
As in so many nights before
I just bet
Grandpa will whisper to Grandma

Sweetheart how about fifty more
