Today my wife went to lunch with an old friend
She came home with tears still in her eyes
It has been several years now her son was murdered
A neighbor boy he was catcher on my little league team
When practice ended he was the boy who stayed picking
up the equipment when others just rushed off
He was carrying a fishing pole and looking for bait;
An angry boy rounded the corner looking to shoot
the first person he saw that day--wrong place, wrong time.
Our friend has gone to every hearing, every sentencing,
For this boy she has always had hate in her heart.
Every time he came up for parole she was there to damn him.
But it was out of her hands he was to be released;
She came to read a long letter of damnation at his parole.
He looked at her and plead guilty to second degree murder
and stated, "Every day in prison I see his and
your face and hate myself for what I have done to you."
Behind her sat his mother as she did every hearing and
sentencing. The two mothers had never spoken, in all the
years. My friend turned faced her and both hugged and cried
My friend said after all the years of hatred God must have
been in that room, all the words prepared she said in words
she never expected ever to say, "I forgive you!"
