No better friend for a lad
Mother, dog and a wayward dad
In my youth all this boy had
I listened to Elvis do his thing
About, "Old Shep", he did sing
Barney was a German Shepard my friend
He would protect me to the end
On a bike, run in the park by my side
No amount of love did he hide
A little of me went with him the day Barney died
After Barney no other dog could be
Thats until one day my kids found Heidi
Thirteen years no better friend for me
But that's old age in a dogs life you see
I could not handle watching another dog die
But the kids said, "But Dad why?"
Sady was a purebred Sheltie collie
Looked just like a minature Lassie by golly
Sady did not like me her master at all
When I came near she would growl
Each night with a leash we walked along the fence
At first thing between us mighty tense
Then tail wagging she was leading me around the yard
From that time on loving each other not that hard
The kids who wanted the dog married moved on
I was now who Sady was sure she did belong
I came home from work one day Sady greeted me at the door
She tugged my pant leg it was a need I could not ignore
She lead me to my favorite chair lay by my side
Sady waited all day for me to come home the day she died
