The year was November of "1961"
I knew for me there was no other one
All my money went into two years of college
I went broke in the search of worldly knowledge
Found a job, proposed we would be married
Took a loan out for the family carriage
A family friend the Jeweler, "What can you pay?"
Two hundred in credit was a lot for us that day
This ring you picked eight hundred more but wait
My wedding present to you kids who I think are great
At that I couldn't afford a ring for me
We faked it--on my finger no ring there be
My step dad said let this be a present from me
All these years I have worn that same ring you see
Monday I looked at my finger and the ring was gone
We pruned, raked leaves all day mowed the lawn
Emptied the trash from the truck piece by piece
moved the beds searched the house in our grief
Thanksgiving wife said, "Your dad had lost his ring."
On my finger all those years didn't mean a thing
All the kids smiled, son said, "Dad you didn't lose your ring."
They found it in their washer what a relief that did bring
