Australian bushfiresA sunburnt country or so the famous lines go, But nature has more of its arsenal to show. That beauty and brutality can go hand in hand, Sharing pleasure and pain, the price of this land The rugged mountain ranges, a paradise on high, Carry below a demon, its embers of evil fly. They beckon danger, flames reaching higher, Feeding the avarice, of an ever consuming fire The far horizons, filling with smoke and fear, Hiding the menace below, grows forever near, Man and beast know, it's time to run and flee. As flames quickly lick higher, engulfing every tree Single houses, and hamlets will soon be in its path, To nearby towns they run, to escape the bushfire's wrath, But the sky grows darker, smoke blocks the fading sun. The air heavy and acrid, a disaster has now begun. Its too late to leave now, no choice, just stay and fight. To save our home and pets in ever decreasing light. The heat now oppressive, blistering our blackened skin, The fight to survive this living hell, is about to begin, Street by street, house by house, hell consumes them all, Outrunning everyone as they flee, stagger or fall, Some survive by good fortune. Its not their time to die. But they'll forever ponder, to try and reason why This wide brown land, now charcoal black , People with nothing, will they dare come back,? It will imprint a population, the terror of that day Remember this land may giveth, but this land can take it away Poetry Ad-Free Upgrades Vote for this poem
