 JANET'S PLANET

Don't Judge A Book By Its Cover

I grew up in a two-parent family. I grew up with a mother and a father. My siblings were two sisters and one brother. My brother is now deceased.
I can remember my father being tall, strong, outspoken, and hard working.
Whenever anyone would meet him, right away, they knew he was a man of authority.
My father went to work every day to provide for his family.
My mother took care of the home. She prepared the meals and took care of our family's needs.
She unlike my father, was quiet and soft spoken. She had an amazing inner strength. She would always say, "Where there's a will there's a way."
My father was the head of the household. He was in control. Decisions to be made, my mother would tell us to check with my father. He wanted us to have a better life than he had. He always encouraged us to do well in school and to study hard.
He and my mother wanted to instill in each of us, a sense of duty and responsibility.
I remember once saying to my mother, "when I grow up I'm going to be my own boss." Her reply, "there will always be someone telling you what to do."
I always thought to myself that my father was getting the upper hand, this was not exactly true.
One day my mother said a powerful statement in regard to my father. She said, "His bark is louder than his bite." This is a popular saying for my father.
A popular saying for my mother is, "Still waters run deep."
"Don't judge a book by its cover."

Author's note: This is not a poem. The title is a
popular saying and three popular sayings were used in the essay. My dear father mellowed through
the years. This essay was written for a creative writing class.
