Matthew Young is a new beat poet, and also a Doors fan, the second name Young --- in this case is correct --- because both the poetry and the poet are! I especially dug: 'Brendan Behans' Glass', 'Diet Christ', 'Dreaming Like A Symphony' and 'Dublin Ramblings'; amongst the 247 pages of Matthew's first poetry works in his new book: BEATING THE LILIES.

Meeting Matt a couple of years ago on a poetry reading trip with other Doors fans in that low-lit Rue de la Roquette passage, near my fave Parisian hotel the Royal Bastille --- we hung like Beats and talked poetry and Doors stuff; and hung with a chick called Kat who was into Hemingway: all outside in the cool breeze of a July night. This cat is a traveler and a seeker, and what comes through on these works of his, is a man in touch with the true spirit of Beat! ... like all good poetry you'll have to read some of these a few times over --- to lean on all the angles...

The Poet

Poet: beatingthelilies

Matthew Young was born in Raleigh, North Carolina in 1984. He moved to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida at the age of 12 at which time he discovered poetry. Around this time he discovered love and decided that his new found discoveries went hand in hand. Sometime later, he got mixed up in bad things and discovered that poetry went hand in hand with these things as well. After traveling around Europe off and on for a few years, Matthew decided to get sober and quit women. He has never been happier. In 2008, Matthew published his first collection of poetry titled, 'Beating The Lilies' which can be purchased at any online book retailer. In 2011, Matthew moved to New York City and became a resident of the Hotel Chelsea where he spends his nights writing poetry as a stick of sandalwood burns alongside him. In between writing, he spies on his neighbors who seem to have forgotten the purpose of curtains on windows. He frequents the Hell's Kitchen Flea Market on Sunday's and has no children (to the best of his knowledge.)
