 Contemporary poetry by Dan Donlan

Searching in the attic
For long forgotten memories
From the hidden shadows of my mind
Putting away memories
of days long before
In a box given to me on my retirement
A small diary in it poems
Fell laying loose on top
It wasn't't in my handwriting and first time I saw it
Dated 1984 and unsigned
Bits and pieces I had written at my work station
Long before I thought of writing poetry
Some were just daily postings
thoughts of as having no interested by others
An example:

POLLUTION
A snow cone invades the skies;
Hidden beneath a Scarlet vermilion Hemorrhage
Beauty to the naked eyes
A deadly message left for the realist
Of man made pollution's

In my only book of poems, "Womb of the Same Mother!"
These words were found in my poem of Mt Rainier
More about beauty than worries of pollution entering
the atmosphere but in the Diary pollution's was circled

Rushing to the seas returning sands
Laid down as Sandcastles by you and me
To know what can and cannot be
For as the tides wash out
That that lasts becomes Eternity

A mind at rest is wasted!
Food for thought untasted

A BIRD IN FLIGHT
To soar
to seek
Embrace the skies
Alas I am grounded
For no wings have I!

Years later my Niece died in a tragic motor accident. In the
blue skies of Edmond's her two children released balloons
to fly to Heaven and find their mother. These words again
came to me. In a poem of remembrance, "In memorial
to Staci Yager", who died much too soon.

To Soar
To seek
Embrace the sky
Alas no Wings have I!
Her walk so gentle
Yet aloft
As a baby bird on its maiden flight
Her voice so soft
A mere whisper in the night
No more beautiful woman
I must say
That she coming towards
as the day the Lord took her away

This week is the anniversary of her accident. The family has gathered together
in Staci's memory son and daughter then children the day she died
were in the car following the motor-home she was driving traveling to Canada
to watch as Her husband, their father, competing in a Triathlon
Staci's son now an athlete in his own right Is getting married late this spring.
Both her children graduates at Washington State college,
Where their mother and dad met and received their Masters

Upon your palm I wrote, "I love you!"
On the walk we too, you and me took
Near a shady sparkling brook
under and umbrella tree
Words softly written, out so gentle came back so strong
An Indelible tattoo that only God can erase
For in my heart you alone belong
and on your palm I ran out of space

Later I gave my wife the ring I held in the other hand
55 years we have been married
Womb of the Same Mother
Title of a poetry book written long ago
But the meaning as clear to day as it was then
Fighting and hating should end
For whatever color, religion or ideals
We are all in the end Sisters and Brothers
In memory of Staci
Who weekly went to the homeless sites
A step beyond, she brought food and clothing
Not from donations no one knew she was doing it
Donated from her own pocketbook
I talked to some of the tent people
She would take someone who needed help
To the local Goodwill and let them pick out there needs
None of this was known even by family
A her memorial they came to honor her
Standing outside in the rain ashamed to come inside
We had to take them by hand and bring them inside
To take care of those who could not it seemed help themselves
We share this Earth least in hate we destroy it

I am not sure who made this diary. I thought no one was interested in
what words I was putting on tiny pieces of paper. When I get
discouraged I realized I am not writing for nothing. Someone was
reading the notes and with gentle comfort that unneeded "Oh the comfort",  tossed away.
I make it a point to give someone needy a dollar or two day
To see some of the surprises on their faces. I only wish I
had more for I remember the days so poor we needed help

Reworked 3/26 2017 using spell check I did not have in 1984
