The Cross Above Her
On her knees she folded her hands staring at the cross just above her. She closed her eyes and dreamed of being a normal child, but all she saw were two shadows at combat- battle wounds that no one knew about. She crawled to the couch where mother told her to stay. She curled into a ball covering herself with grandmother's blanket. days of warm hugs and gentle kisses on the forehead would be a dream. She laid with eyes shut, but her mind awake with an overload of the aroma of booze and the overcast of fog-like smoke. Her mother slammed into the wall near the couch. Screams echoed through the house and to the cows who stood blissfully unaware. She kept her eyes shut and breathed softly her mind wants to run. Runs... Her body is paralyzed. The screams her mother recently made suddenly die with thunderous echoing collapses. One eye sneaks a peak through a hole in her blanket staring at the cross above her head until more thunder brought darkness. Her father sat on the dingy chair next to the couch drinking images away while the blood-flecked cross still hangs on the wall above the little girl's head.
