Ian James Daniel
Site Address: poetrypoem.com/yirrpa
My name is Ian James Daniel and I was born in Cooktown North Queensland, Australia. I currently live in the Cairns region between the rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef. I've spent my working life in Education throughout the top half of Australia and as a result of these diverse cultural experiences identify strongly with Aboriginal and Islander cultures.
I was kindly given permission to use my Kokomenjana Bush Name from Kowanyama as my pen name. Nhawrr Yirrpa translates from the Yir-yirront language group and Rainbow Serpent. Most of my writing is done at Perrotas open air restaurant at the Art Gallery in Cairns while drinking a pot of green tea. It is one of my many sacred places.
I was a late starter in writing verse with little formal exposure since teenage years. Eventually something within has it's way with you and all those bits of life stories begin rising to the surface, wanting a piece of the action.
Invisible bits from the past and present brought forward, sensing a way out, tripping over themselves in a mind beat in an effort to express in a new found creative outlet. Once you find your voice it is difficult to let go.
You reflect on how and why this is happening and only then begin to understand how your Grade 1-4 grade teacher at our bush school cast those early seeds. With the skill known only to those who can teach four grades at once, she would read poetry in such a way you could smell the smells and walk through the bush with the butcher bird calls while still sitting at your desk on a musky heady early afternoon summer reading class. The truth of it all lies in there somewhere.
